Welcome to Threshold Therapy

Kari Hilwig, LICSW

Seeking therapy can sometimes be a difficult step to take, so it’s an honor to me you’ve landed here. I offer you compassionate support without judgment so that you can begin to examine and hold what you are seeking to process.

I specialize in serious and chronic illness, death and dying, and grief and loss. Loss does not only mean the loss of a life or ability. It can also be the loss of a relationship, of a job, of a sense of identity, and more. Life transitions, whether in our control or not, whether positive or challenging, are like crossing a threshold. We leave a part of something behind as we venture into the unknown. Whatever door you are opening, I am here to support you.

While my focus is those living with illness, I am available to people seeking support around other life transitions, as well. I can also provide consulting around advance care planning and end-of-life matters.

I currently offer telehealth appointments only, but plan to offer in person visits in Seattle and on Vashon Island soon.

About me

I received my Master of Social Work from the University of Washington and am a licensed clinical social worker. I have worked in the field of medical and palliative care social work for nearly 10 years and have a passion for supporting those experiencing serious illness, whether they are the patient or someone who loves them. I have been diagnosed with and recovered from cancer twice in my life and have experienced my own losses and the ensuing grief. While your story is unique, I bring to my practice an understanding of what it is to feel lost after a diagnosis or death and what it also means to find a sense of peace and acceptance in the face of despair.

In session, I value an integrative, humanistic, and person-centered approach. I believe that:
